Sunday, 2/16 | Restoring Herreshoff’s DORIS

This live event is now available for replay:

Description:

After languishing in a boat yard in New London CT for 30 years, DORIS, the largest all-wood sailing vessel built by Herreshoff Manufacturing Co., was scheduled to be scrapped at the end of August 2013. Given a one-year lease on life by the generous collaboration of a good friend and Snediker Yacht Restoration of Pawcatuck, a search for a new owner was spearheaded. Now, thanks to an enthusiastic client, DORIS has been saved. David will share his experience leading this massive restoration of this 1905 Herreshoff classic. Live Q&A to follow.

Speaker:

David Snediker – Owner, Snediker Yacht Restoration.

    Amazing job David!
Thoroughly enjoyed the presentation. Brothers Nat Greene & John Brown are smiling down on you!!
They were an amazing team , making every part of the vessels they built, and your team is doing an equally amazing job restoring DORIS!
Shout out to Ms. Ansel for all her hard work in digitizing the MIT collection. What a valuable resource!
    Well Done!

That is the cleanest, most organized, and best lighted boat shop I have ever seen. Great presentation on a great yacht! Such a beauty coming back to life. Thank you!!

Lovely, Dave! Whenever I was near New London, I used to stop to stare at Doris sitting there with Spartan. Great to know this was happening, now good to see and hear your talk. Thanks!

As David noted, “it takes a lot of imagination to take on a project like that.” Hats off to “Joe,” the cryptically mentioned name (perhaps a pseudonym?) of the latest owner (since 2013) who is funding this labor of love. Can’t image his identity will remain under wraps for long, as this boat will cause a stir wherever she sails. Speaking of which, when is the project expected to be completed with Doris once again under sail?

As a life time subscriber to Off Center Harbor and a “love affair” fan of “Alerion” since my early twenties (now clocking eighty-three), I am so appreciative of both Off Center Harbor and the Classic Boat Show for tracking this project and letting us all be a part of this new history in the making. Because of the deed of gift of “Alerion” to the Seaport, Waldo turned my totally wet behind the ears offer to help with the restoration of “Alerion” those many years ago when I was in my early twenties. Waldo called it as he should have! Can’t wait to hear more about “DORIS.” THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Chris Roosevelt

Hi Dave, fantastic job! Thanks so much for a great presentation. You’ve discovered so much over the course of this restoration, are there any recent “archaeological” discoveries (i.e. evidence of the HMCo. employees on the shop floor who originally built the boat) you can share with us?

The antique ship’s wheel that you showed, was that by chance found at Larry Lannan’s gallery outside of Boston?

What remains of the “original” boat?
