Sunday, 2/19 — “The Race to Alaska” Movie Night

The Recording of the Live Presentation is Now Available Below

Note: We’ve separated the presentation and Q&A into two videos below.

Intro & Movie:

Q&A with Director, Race Boss, and Racers:

R2AK has been called “the best worst idea,” spurring all varieties of folks in boats ( as long as they don’t have a motor) to race unsupported from Port Townsend, WA to Ketchikan, AK. The Race to Alaska Movie mixes raw racer-shot footage with vast aerials and in-depth interviews to tell the story of the race’s improbable inception and the journey of the men and women who have answered the call to action. These everyday heroes challenge themselves to find their edge on an exhilarating, engineless charge through the Pacific Northwest, traversing one of the most complex and beautiful race courses on Earth.

Wow! What a fantastic film! It took me through every range of emotion and opinion I have. What amazing people, digging deep, going to the edge of themselves, of nature, of life. Thank you for sharing this incredible film, and these incredible journeys. I could watch it over and over. So good!!

    Fabulous movie!
I remember seeing the boats in Port Townsend that first year of the race and thinking, “You’ve got to be kidding!”.
I will never be up for that myself (definitely, without a woodstove!), but I really enjoyed sharing the experience through Zach’s magic endeavour.
    Thank you!

This is a wonderful movie. I’ve followed the R2AK off and on and have considered entering. This is by far the best overview of what it’s like. Thanks for the inspiration and education.

Amazing race idea, wonderful spirited participants, so cold and wet, and warm relationships formed for further life adventures together. Best part was the film and everyone survived in Mother Nature’s playground.

    Thanks to OCH

Does the Coast Guard charge a fee to R2AK?

  • James Scoten 3 years ago

I thought the film director might be like me, an old gaffer, who would want to do the race with 3-D vision goggles with a warm drink in an easy chair 🙂

I am seeing this for the first time. Words can’t do this justice. Congrats on a wonderful film – you’ve really brought out the spirit of this amazing race!

That was SO INSPIRING!!! Nate- In the early eighties I came very close to working for Boston Whaler traveling the country towing one of their Harpoon 5.2s from place to place to drum up business. I was laughing aloud here to see and imagine you sailing R2AK on one…. especially stoned.

    • Nate Rooks 3 years ago

Dave, I had no idea – that’s amazing!

My brother also had a Harpoon 6.2 for years, a great picnic bench of a boat. We’ve yet to sail a 4.6.

We love sailing it and are so grateful it was wide enough to sleep us both on the sole… even if it was a bit wet from the Elvstrom bailers.

And our daughter worked the Inside Passage on cruise ships for a couple of summers. I had no idea how varied, dangerous and spectacular it was there. The CG observer/ trainer’s talk to the crews was very important for the filmmakers to include. The possible dangers were indeed extreme.

Awesome, film! Thank you so much.
How do most people get their boats and themselves back to Port Townsend?

  • Arthur Braud 3 years ago

What an awesome documentary on an marine Iditarod‼️

  • BJ Floyd 3 years ago

Wow, fantastic film. We did this trip in a 35’ sailboat – with a motor! Those currents and the wind – cannot imagine doing this without an engine. Thanks for the voyage!

  • Jeanne Turner 3 years ago

Wow. This is amazing. I’ll be interested to find out how who is doing the filming of this race and how.

Yay R2AK!! Been following since Team Sail Like a Girl entered and never have I ever cried watching a little dot on a map move across the finish line!

I never get tired of watching this. SO well done.

  • Kim Bottles 3 years ago

I have followed it every year.

  • Duncan Hollomon 3 years ago

I was hoping to hear from Jake Beatty, the E.D. of Northwest Maritime Center, and one of the co-founders of the R2AK. He’s a great guy, and understands the spirit of the race as well as anyone.

Question for the Director, Zach: You worked for about six years on this film, getting almost no funding and limited support. How does it feel now to have this film finished and getting such rave reviews?

  • Dave and Margaret Tew 3 years ago

Do the awards remain as original: $10K nailed to a tree for first place and a set of steak knives for second? So perfect for Alaska.
