When Steve White took over the Brooklin Boatyard from his father Joel, he wanted to take the yard from plank-on-frame construction to cold-mounding. Because no customers were willing to fund a revolutionary construction method, Steve elected to build a Swede 55 for himself. VORTEX proved to be a winning combination in every way, she is very fast and is still winning races in classic regattas. She has also proved to be a wonderfully durable boat who looks as good today as she did when she was launched 32 years ago.

Great boat. More than 20 years ago, there was a (glass) Swede 55 in Salem Sound (Massachusetts). One day I was out in the Alden Triangle I then had when I saw her idliing along with just her blade jib up. I glided by under full rig, nodded to the owner and turned down Marblehead Channel toward Baker’s Island. After a few miles, I looked back and saw the Swede, both sails up, coming like the proverbial freight train. As she zoomed by I called out, “You don’t get passed a lot, do you!” The guy at the helm just smiled and shook his head.
