Owner’s Description
This is a Herreshoff 28 modified wooden ketch built by Far East Yachts, Japan, and commissioned on April 15, 1966. Number 82. She was purchased by a Howard J. Nelson and named Sea Brig. I bought her from her second owner five years ago, who had renamed her Taylor Rose, after his daughter. We just call her Rosy. She had not been sailed for ten years. She is double-planked mahogany over oak. I did the restoration myself and have kept her in her original simple style although the cedar bucket was “upgraded” to a legal marine sanitation system. Her two burner stove, Force 10 heater and lamps all operate on kerosene. I bought a set of tan bark sails for $300 and so her sail number isn’t 82. My wife
Kerry and I, or sometimes just me, sail her weekly off the Central California Coast. Our only cruising has been to Port San Luis and San Simeon. We really like the ketch for the variety of combinations and ability to dock her with just the mizzen. The staysail is a plus. She balances like a dream and sometimes I forget to set the autopilot!
Nothing has really changed since last year except that my wife has decided that sailing is no longer a part of her curriculum and so Rosy and I mostly do our weekly sails solo. Lots of humpback encounters this year. I usually always post some video of the sail on Instagram:dennisbailey9763
