Owner’s Description
SINGOALLA is an International DRAGON designed by Johan Anker in 1929 to be cruised off the coast to Norway. The design quickly gained popularity and in 1948 was selected as an Olympic Class boat, an honor it retained and sailed in the Olympics until 1978. Today there are over 1,500 DRAGONS registered with the International DRAGON association with countless numbers used as perfect day sailors.
She was built by Anders Gjeruldsen Batbyggeri (boatbuilders) in 1947 of Grimstad, Norway in 1947. She is the second DRAGON registered in the US and carries sail # USD2. She was totally restored by East Passage Boatwrights and won an award for professional restoration at the prestigious Mystic Seaport Boat Show. Great care was used in her restoration to assure an authentic restoration, not just a “repair”. The quality of her original materials is evident in her full length quarter sawn clear Norwegian Pine (a double first cousin to Douglas Fir) planks. Frames and all her ‘backbone’ are White Oak fastened with bronze fasteners. Her decks are larch overlaid with Dynel set in epoxy. Covering boards and coamings are mahogany. Her new mast is aircraft grade Sitka spruce.
DRAGONS, while absolutely beautiful to look at, are even better sailors. They are foremost SAILBOATS where artistic form delightfully meets function. To borrow a thought from THE DUKE Ellington “If it sounds good it IS good” DRAGONS look good and ARE good.
The only thing better than one DRAGON is two DRAGONS! One photo depicts SINGOALLA sailing in company with GRAYCEFUL, another ‘woody’ DRAGON.Already a member? Log in herePhotos
