24' Oughtred Arctic Tern, Stretched (2012) - SILVER TERN

The design is based on the “Arctic Tern” by Ian Oughtred. ” Silver Tern ” has been extended to 23′ 6″ .

I bought the plans for Ian Oughtred’s ” Arctic Tern” then thought that as the boat is of a size that would require a trailer anyway, we might as well build her a little larger .

The hull is planked with 10.5 mm hoop pine, an Australian plantation tree. The frames are laminated kaihikatea, a light New Zealand native timber also known as white pine.

The hollow mast and spars of the sliding gunter rig are built as lightly as practicable of New Zealand kauri.

The result has been a light and agile boat that performs superbly.
