37' Herreshoff/S&S/Persson Newport 29 Class Sloop (1953) - ROGUE
Owner’s Description
A variant of the Herreshoff Newport 29 with a Sparkman and Stephens rig and custom deck layout and interior. Rogue was built for Dan Morrell who convinced Sidney Herreshoff to re-measure his father’s half model and develop offsets so that Seth Persson could produce an accurate hull shape. Morrell then had Sparkman & Stephens design a more modern sloop rig—which she carried for a few years but by 1960, with a mizzen added, she became a yawl for a couple of decades. Now she’s a sloop again and has proven a very successful racer. Besides her speed, she’s an excellent cruiser and just a wonderful creation to look at. It’s hard to beat that hollow bow and the subtle shadows it casts!

I worked for Rod Stephens at Seth Persson’s Boatyard as his representative for a design they were having built there. Seth said ROGUE was one of his favorites.
My family cared for Rogue after Dan Morrell from the late ‘70s into the late 90’s. We covered the whole east coast from Roque Ils ME into the Bahamas, and she was a wonderful companion. My dad raced her to many victories during this time, and she continues to collect wins testifying to the great design. My wife and I lived aboard for 8 mos and created a lifetime of memories. Benjamin MendlowiShe is still the prettiest boat in any harbor thanks to the love and dedication of her owners. Great photos!

Benjamin Mendlowitz found us returning to Nassau from the Exumas and we ended up in a variety of calendar and mag covers, much to our surprise.
