Owner’s Description
Red Schooner is a 1981 Sam Devlin designed and built 22 foot on deck and 26 feet overall pilothouse schooner. When I found her for sale online a decade ago I did a restoration. I now spend most Sunday’s aboard either having a cup of tea and relaxing on the water or I go out for a sail or for motoring on no wind days.I spent many hours on restoration and sailing her around Puget Sound. Recently I replaced her Yamaha 6HP outboard with a 2014 Tohatsu 6HP Sail Pro extra long shaft 4 stroke (See new photos).
The last 25 years I’ve spent immersed in the world of Devlin Boats. First as a boat builder and now as office manager. I became acquainted with Sam’s designs when I ordered plans to build the 15 foot Egret design.
Then my wife said you love the boats so much you should work there!
I built the Egret in the lean-to next to Sam’s shop to help me understand stitch and glue boat building when I got hired to work there. Now I wanted something larger to protect me from Northwest rain.
Red Schooner was ideal. Restoration was fun. All three sails are self-tending so I can single hand. There are two steering locations: the cockpit tiller for nice weather days and the pilothouse wheel steering for heavy rain or snow days. The cockpit is self-bailing and the 6HP outboard pushes her along at hull speed. I enjoy all the interior woodwork and pot bellied little stove and the beautiful painting on tiles of a square rigger under full sail that’s behind the stove. A perfect Northwest Boat.
Home-port is now Olympia, Washington.
