The only 45m2 Danish-built spidsgatter in America. At 28 feet, she is 2 foot longer than her dozen or so sister ships found sailing around the Pacific Northwest of America and British Columbia, Canada. An MSJ Hansen design, she was built by Karl Thomsen of Kalundborg, Denmark in 1936. Once you see her, you’ll understand how she got the nickname “Best Buns in the Boatyard.” While the design class of 1920s included 3 designers (Utzon, Berg, and Hansen) and 5 sizes, the Hansen/Thomsen combo are notably more “buxom.” It’s that beauty and strength of timbers + love that helped her survive the decades.

Kaci..I’ve lost touch with friends who moved to Port Townsend in the 1980’s, George Julia Maynard, and.was wondering if you knew or know of them? Both good craftspeople, they built and launched ZULU in 1992…sound familiar? I would have thought they’d have a page here…
I know them well, Diane! Julia was a co-owner at Haven Boatworks during a couple of my haul outs with PAX. George would come by at lunch sometimes and we’d swap stories about writing. He wrote a book about his submariner experiences called “Scudding.” What a read! He was really encouraging when I wrote “Finding PAX”. Zulu is now owned by a couple in Seattle. Last I saw her, she was (still beautiful) moored at the Center for Wooden Boats in Lake Union, Seattle. One of my fav photos is of Julia catching my lines after one haulout. My transmission cable wasn’t set right and I had to hustle over to a dock. She was right there, ready. I’ll let her know you asked about them and Zulu!
WOW! SO GLAD I ASKED! Yes, please, send them my regards…Julia and I worked together when they lived in Redwood City, California, George was always there for anyone who needed help and for entertaining us all with his stories. Both of them were always on the spot for support. We were close friends but lost touch around the time that George published his book and we were so very far away, fully occupied with whatever we thought was more pressing than ensuring special connections. Yes, please let her know it would be lovely to catch up if possible. My favorite photo is of the THREE of them, rowing past us every morning on their way to work, Barney (Boston Terrier) seated between them, doting parents grinning at their beloved little dog who was excitedly greeting us; a special buddy of mine.
Wonderful boat and story. Thanks for sharing.

Love everything here…big sigh of contentment, huge smile of pleasure.
Thanks, Diane. Every little bit of good we can share, let’s do! <3
