I designed and built “Malu” as a personal indulgence, built for me to my own requirements. I wanted a boat that had good sailing abilities, was easy to launch and rig, and would require low maintenance. The starting point of the design was the “Windmill”, a fast sharpie designed by Clark Mills as the next step for teenagers that were no longer eligible to compete in the “Optimist Pram” class.
“Malu” is longer with more beam than the “Windmill”, with a centerboard, cushioned thwarts with storage compartments, and a low aspect traditional rig, it is much more comfortable for day sailing. With a good turn of speed without sacrificing comfort or seaworthiness, after 10 years it is still like Christmas when I pull the cover off and go for a sail.
