Owner’s Description
Malabar ll was designed by and for John Alden. She was built by Morse Company in Thomaston Main and launched in 1922. Malabar ll is the second in the series of ten schooners John Alden designed for Himself. She underwent a rebuild in 1955 in Camden, Maine after which she sailed to Spain and back.Malabar ll has been in the custody of Jim and Ginny Lobdell of Vineyard Haven Massachusetts for the last 45 years, and now co-owned with Myles Thurlow. They have raced and cruised her between Virginia and Nova Scotia with a family cruise to Bermuda. Malabar ll remains true to her original configuration. Malabar ll was used in the movie “Message in a Bottle” in 1989, which was where she earned her recent rebuild in 2000. That rebuild was done in Vineyard Haven, MA by Andy Lyon and Jim Lobdell in Jim’s back yard.
Malabar ll has participated in the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race in 2001, 2004, and 2008. In those years she has placed 1st in class C and in 2008 she had the best corrected time at Thimble Shoal against all classes. She continues to race and participate in Schooner and traditional boat events from Virginia to Nova Scotia.
