I built the Caledonia Yawl in a carriage house in the heart of Philadelphia. She has sailed with spirit in the lightest of airs as well as in 30 knot winds. While sailing in high winds I’ve triple reefed the main but once neglected to reef the small mizzen. This sail is so far aft that it can cause a very strong windward helm. However the sail is a key element.
When sheeted in it will allow you to drop or reef the main sail or just take a break while holding steadily into the wind. Since the rig has no jib its windward performance is similar to a cat boat rig. However, off the wind she is a very strong performer and a joy to sail in all conditions.
