32' Chapelle Quoddy Pilot Ketch (1973) - INTEGRITY
Owner’s Description
The Quoddy Pilot is an excellent sailing “character boat.” The original design incorporates all of the principal features which are so essential for modern cruising. She is fast, simply rigged and easy to handle with a very simple sail plan. She has a huge cabin for her size and oversize cockpit, as well as, being fine looking. With a ballast-to-boat weight ratio of greater than 50/50, she is remarkably stiff and will stay on her feet easily in a brisk wind, rarely requiring reefing and then only in exceptionally squally and extended bad weather. She is very seaworthy. There is plenty of room, both internally and externally, to move around without crowding. Her 9′ cockpit length offers the afternoon or day sailor about all the space needed for a big family or plenty of friends where most of the time is spent sailing. INTEGRITY was originally built as a sloop but was recently converted to a ketch to make her more manageable for her captain who is now 35 years older.

Most excellent! I’m rebuilding a Quoddy Pilot, Premlata, in Rockland, Maine originally built by cousin Gary Price after-hours while working at Penobscot BoatWorks. She was started in 1973 and launched in ’75. I’ve been working on her off and on since 2007 and intend on re-launching summer of 2023.
Good morning Chrisso. Drew Scott at Hylan & Brown in Brooklin put it all together. We experimented with different configurations and it is now working seamlessly. It is a different boat and so easy to single hand. Well balanced with jib & Mizzen and never have to leave the cockpit. No longer hanging on out on the bowsprit. Drew has really fine tuned the entire rig and it gets better each year. This will be season 3. Come up for a sail and check her out. I’m sure Drew would be happy to speak with you.
Fantastic! I’m sure you’re in touch with Ed who is putting an entire registry of all of them together. Come up to Sedgwick this summer & go for a sail. I’ve owned her for 35 years. Sailed her as a sloop for 30 years and then had Nat Benjamin redesign her & Hylan & Brown did the work. What a difference. So much more manageable now that I’m older. Roller furling, Marconi mizzen—SWEET! All the best on your Project. Send some pics.

What a beauty! We went to Quoddy Light last summer during a storm, and those pilot boats must be tough with a capitol T
seems perfect going sailing soon

Kirk and David, so fun to see this exchange. Looking forward to more of such.
Kirk, my dad had PBW and I know Gary well. I stopped by some years ago and chatted. And David and I have had similar conversations.
David. the new rig looks amazing. I want info on how you set up the roller furler!
Well, gents, how ’bout we meet up sometime this season to chat PenBoats? I brew beer, make wine, and build boats. Who’s in?!
Kirk–Let’s make a plan for sailing this summer. We’ll get Ed up as well. Reach out to me when you can (maclean.arch@gmail.com). All the best.
