Owner’s Description
Hāereere is a cedar strip canoe that started my obsession with wooden boat building. Her name means ‘to wander or meander’ in New Zealand’s Māori language.
Along with the decorative strip and curve patterns done in different shades of North American cedar in her hull, she also incorprates New Zealand native timbers in her decks and matching paddles.
These include miro, rimu and rewarewa well over a century old and coming from a store gathered by my grandfather in his days as a forester in the mid 20th century. She’s since had many wandering adventures involving fishing, exploration and general fun transporting another three generations of the family with the help of wood gathered by their forebear. A kayak has followed this build, with a sailing dinghy now on the stocks.Already a member? Log in herePhotos
