Owner’s Description
“What a special boat. From the sweet lines that Frank Rice developed over one hundred years ago to the achingly lovely conversion that Doug Hylan headed up in the late 90s, GRAYLING stands out as an extraordinarily good looking work boat turned pleasure craft. Although her narrow hull has us thoughtfully pick which days we run offshore, the mere 12 1/2′ beam still provides ample room below deck for warm, lovely, and comfortable accommodations on long cruises. The sails are generally set for steadying and good looks only and not so much for driving her forward. We are grateful to the care and attention given the vessel by Tom Townsend Custom Marine in Mystic CT and by Doug and Ellery at DN Hylan and Associates in Brooklin, ME. Since the vessel’s restoration she has cruised as far South as the Bahamas and as far North as Newfoundland. Our family treasures the cruises we take each summer and look forward to decades more to come.In the Fall of 2021, we undertook significant additional restoration work to some of the original 106 year old deadwood in the area of the shaftlog.
Big timber expert, Kevin Roux, conducted exceptional work of replacing keel members, the shaft log, and floors, as depicted in the set of shots below. Doug Hylan and Maynard Bray made several visits to the work being performed at the Hodgdon yard in Southport ME and were pleased with process and outcome of Kevin’s fine work.
