Owner’s Description
FanShi is a 26ft, shoal-draught, home-built, plywood/epoxy, liveaboard junk. I built her on my own between September 2015 and January 2021.
She has a number of unusual features and has recently won the prestigious Bluebird Cup of the Royal Cruising Club of Great Britain, which is “awarded from time to time to a member who through the designing, commissioning, improvement or restoration of a boat or a major piece of equipment has made a noteworthy contribution to the development or heritage of cruising. The boat was designed by David Tyler and me (Annie Hill) to a particular set of requirements. Apart from the junk rig (in a tabernacle), unusual features include junk bow, bilge boards and twin rudders. For all this, the boat looks very ‘traditional’. She is based in Northland, New Zealand and is ideal for this area, but is quite capable of offshore passages.
So far, we have sailed nearly a thousand miles, and I have found the boat lively and responsive, rarely requiring the assistance of her 6hp four-stroke outboard motor. She creates a lot of interest wherever she goes!
FanShi is a perfect cruising home and I love being able to creep right in to the beach, where I can listen to and watch the birds. The shoal draught also means that I rarely have a problem finding somewhere to drop my hook, even in a crowded anchorage.

Annie, a great job on FanShl, nice to see how you have kept her simple. Less repair and more time on the water. We don’t see a lot of Junk rigs up here in Maine waters, so that is a rare sight. Color scheme is great, hope you get to enjoy the sailing as much as the building, I’m sure you will. You have a great area to explore by the looks of things.

Hi Annie. You must be so proud of what you have created. its a wonderful achievement. She looks pretty as a picture inside and out! I agree with Leland, the colour scheme is perfect and she looks like a dream to sail. I also I really liked your movies so thanks for adding them to your page.
Hi John. Thank you. I’m really thrilled with the way FanShi has turned out. She’s not for everybody, but suits me down to the ground.
There are now one or two variations on the theme in build. Anyone wanting plans can get the for free by joining the Junk Rig Association and contacting David Tyler through the membership list. It would be fun to see how other people interpret the boat 🙂
I had nothing to do with any of the movies, really, but I appreciate that people have been kind enough to make them and share them with me.
Your boat is wonderful. I love all the colors and the simplicity of the one masted junk rig. And the interior makes a lovely home on the water. I enjoyed the videos.
Regarding outboards – the small one on my boat in the photo is just a 2.5 HP air cooled Honda. It worked well for getting in and out of a marina. I now have a 6 HP Yamaha. I love what it can do, I hate the noise and smell.
Your boat is my show favorite. It is unique and practical.

Thank for your kind words. The “working name” for the design is SibLim – Small Is Beautiful, Less Is More. It sums up the whole concept, really.
I’ve done my time sailing without an engine, but I’m afraid I like getting the hook down at night. In truth, I don’t use the engine that often, but I do like to know it is there!
There are some real little gems in the show: I find them much more interesting and appealing than the 70+ ft Fifes, Herreshoffs and Logans, personally. (I confess the fiberglass boats don’t even get a click!!) Sam Devlin’s boats are always worth a second glance 😀
