“Deep Calling” is home-built in marine ply and epoxy to John Welsford’s “Walkabout” lug/yawl design. Plans are available from JW (www.jwboatdesigns.co.nz/), from Duckworksbbs.com, and as full-size templates from http://navigatorjoel.blogspot.com/ “Deep Calling” is a “stretched” version of Walkabout, with the designer allowing all fore-and-aft dimensions to be lengthened 12 1/2% from the original plans. I added the cuddy cabin to resemble Welsford’s signature SCAMP and Long Steps designs. The cuddy serves well to keep my camping gear out of the weather, and provides room for my large galley box and other gear. Walkabout was originally designed by JW for a client to camp-cruise the Maine Island Trail. Being originally from New England, that caught my attention! While Maine is a bit far to trailer to from my current digs, the BC Marine Trail system beckons me westward to the Vancouver, BC area, where I used to play hooky from university and raced catamarans in the 70’s. These days I camp-sail on central Alberta’s lakes –that is when they’re not snow-bound and ice-encrusted for almost half the year! On breezy summer days you’ll find me heading to some favorite camping spot on Gull Lake, Alberta where “Deep Calling” is the ONLY wooden boat in the Central Alberta Sailing Club. Yawl come for a sail some time!
