THE ST.IVES JUMBO.
A class of small, open, double-ended lugger introduced uniquely to the St.Ives fishery in the mid 1880s reflecting a growing demand for a smaller boat to replace the local 4-man gig.
Today’s Jumbos are replicas of a specific design by the renowned local builder, William Paynter and were researched and built by Jonny Nance.
Ironically named after the largest animal in captivity, the Jumbo was introduced at the end of the age of sail and shortly before the demise of the fishery and so represents the epitome of sailing boat design resulting from generations of trial and error.Already a member? Log in herePhotos
