67' Converted Salmon Seiner (1952) - CAPE ROSS

  • Owner’s Description

    The CAPE ROSS was built as a salmon seiner for the Canadian Fish Co. in 1952 by Sterling Shipyards Ltd of Vancouver, Canada. Her original design came from the desk of Leigh H. Coolidge (Seattle, WA) in 1925. That’s the reason her hull looks so “old style” to many people. Because it really is an old design. She was retired from commercial fishing in 1999 and was likely saved from going to the landfill and converted to a yacht (approx. 2008-2010) by a respected and courageous Canadian captain. In 2012 she was sold and relocated to Seattle and was lovingly cared for and enjoyed by a family there until just recently when she changed hands again to her present owners. As part of the conversion from tired old fishing vessel to a yacht the house, decks and bulwarks were built of marine aluminum. Not a bad way to go if you have to subject your boat to the weather of the Pacific Northwest and don’t have covered moorage. Being an older design her hull is easily driven and provides a nice ride. She can roll a little bit though. But that’s ok. She cruises Puget Sound and British Columbia waters, otherwise known as the Salish Sea. Prior to the restrictions caused by Covid she cruised Canadian waters and attended classic/wooden boat shows in Richmond, B.C., Victoria, B.C. and Port Townsend, WA. In the 2019 Victoria B.C. Classic Boat Festival she was fortunate to be awarded Best Engine Room. We’re hoping to cruise Southeast Alaska in Summer of 2023 where the present owner spent time commercial fishing in his younger days. We’re thinking about establishing/renewing a CAPE ROSS website or establishing a Facebook account. Not sure though, we like flying under the radar best we can.       Every time I come across the Cape Ross, I fall in love again. Beautiful boat and what looks like a 1st Class conversion!

      Always liked the looks of your boat. Our was built 1952 as well! Hope to see her in person some day! She’s a beauty!
