The Friendship sloop is a recognizable classic of the Maine coast. The ubiquitous “pickup truck” of the late 19th and early 20th century, they were used for lobstering, general fishing, and moving goods. Many sloops, after a working life, were converted to pleasure boats. Some of the originals are still sailing after a century and many boats have been built to original designs purely as recreational vessels.
Built to the lines of an original Wilbur Morse Friendship from the early 1900s, Black Star is a modern copy built in 1989. She has had the same owners for the last twenty years.

Ted and Judy, probably seen Black Star in our travels, just not met up with you yet. Spend our summers onboard in Penobscot Bay. Have a mooring at Ocean Pursuits north end of Rockland but try not to spend much time there. Will keep a lookout for you and hope to meet up. It will be good when this pandemic is past and things might get back to normal again. Nice looking varnish…on a good looking boat. Dean

Here’s to Ted & Judy! Two people who were instrumental in the chain of events that resulted in our owning FREEDOM. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us newbies over the past few years; you’ve given us a lot of good advice.
May be my favorite Friendship in commission, always beautifully presented.
Congratulations Ted and Judy
Thanks for the kind words Maldwin. We need to catch up soon.
Cheers,
Ted and Judy
Just exceptional. The mast. The panelling. The sails. She is perfect.
