Owner’s Description
Caprice is a 1926 Sound Inter Club, one of 28 boats built to the class by Nevins, with C. D. Mower the designer. The Sound Inter Club class became one of the hottest racing classes in the Twenties, with boats at several yacht clubs throughout Long Island Sound. They were freighted to Bermuda, as well, to race against the Bermuda One Designs.Several of the Inter Club sailors became very well known, especially Corny Shields and Arthur Knapp, and Emil Mosbacher, Sr. In 1937, Shields created the International One Design class, and the early IODs carried over a few key features of the Sound Inter Club.
At that point, the class went on the market, and the boats scattered all over the country. A few went to New Orleans, and 10 or 11 boats would up on Lake George, New York, and were part of an active community of sailors there, until the last two were broken up in the early 1990s.
In 2010, John Kelly commissioned Reuben Smith and his crew to restore two boats, Caprice and Ghost. Caprice was the first of now three boats returned to Lake George.
