Owner’s Description
Constructed to be a personal cruising yacht for the designer and builder, Bud McIntosh, Advent exemplifies the utilitarian approach to boat building typically seen in his work.Wooden Boat Magazine Number 51 (March/April 1983) featured an interview with Bud McIntosh in which he said, “I wanted to build good boats at a reasonable price, and that’s probably the most I can say for myself. My boats have survived. They never got very fancy but they’re still around, while a lot of the very beautiful hand-rubbed jobs are long since gone to pot. They were just too good, too delicate, too refined to stand prolonged use.”
Advent has been with two families for the entirety of her life up to this point. According to the previous owners Advent also served as the precursor design to the Appledore line of schooners. Like so much concerning the history of builds of this era much is contained in oral history as there are few written records still extant (Bud was notoriously bad at paperwork; according to legend the IRS showed up to his shop looking for some kind of financial report and Bud turned to his work partner and said, “Swift, where’s that shingle?”).
Kept in a backyard shed for several years, Advent was passed on to William Davies and Dalah Ostara last year in 2020. A partial refit took place in June 2020 and will be completed this coming July with plans to finish the refitting and outfitting and sail her south to Savannah, Georgia, to employ her as a platform to share the love and joy of traditional sailing as part of a sea school currently being established there.
