An electric, solar powered launch.
The hull is a “Three in one Whaler” number 245 built in Devonport, New Zealand in 1964. Two skin Kauri, glass sheathed inside and outside.
The motive power is a 5hp Elco motor and 5 blade propeller. Power supplied from solar and 4 100Ah lead acid batteries. The electrical equipment is Victron charge controllers and Blue Sea Energy breakers and metering.
A 12V house battery powers the radio, lights, head, and anchor winch.
In summer here on the Mahurangi harbour the 1000W of solar on the cabin top provides most of the power when running at about 4kn. the top speed with battery as well is 5.5 kn, depending on the number of people onboard. She is able to seat 12.
Doors at the forward end of the cabin access a forward cockpit.
There is a head onboard with Elctro Scan treatment system.
A really nice piece of work, comfortable, well thought out and of course my favorite, it is solar powered. Joe Flemming of Elco was the provider over 30 years ago of my first two 5 hp, 48 volt dc motors, controllers, contactors and throttle controls. A lot has changed for the better since then. So nice to see his dedication, expertise and motor selection carries on. If you could add a video, I am sure many here would like to view her making smiles and no noise.
