Patience of the Huon is a Laurent Giles Vertue, or to paraphrase, “Patience is a Vertue”. Her keel was laid in 1970. Six years was spent building her hull, whereupon she was sold to owner #2 who completed the hull planking and carried out limited deck construction, raised a family and established two successful businesses as a result of which little more work was done on her. Twenty six years later, seeing that the project was unlikely to be completed by him, with a heavy heart put her on the market. Seeing a hull that had been constructed thus far with care and knowledge, always under cover, I purchased the incomplete hull and spent the following seven years completing the project. Thirty nine years in construction may not be a record, but it has to come close. She was launched in late 2009 and shortly thereafter sailed from her place of construction in Victoria across the potentially challenging Bass Strait to southern Tasmania where she now lives.
Patience is constructed of Afromosia planking on E. Maculata (Spotted Gum) frames and has Grey Iron bark keel and stem. Interior fitout is Spotted gum and Jarrah, a beautiful deep red timber of Western Australian origin. She sails now on the Huon River for frequent day-sails, and further afield up the Tasmanian East coast and the d’Entrecastaux Channel.
