Caledonia Yawl with balanced lug
I’m an amateur boatbuilder and wooden surfboard maker but with considerable woodworking experience and a small shop. Having limited space I fabricated all components prior to the hull build. Spars, centerboard & rudder assemblies, thwarts, etc were brought to completion as near as possible ( including varnishing and line splicing) . Open air driveway build of the hull started about mid March and launched early August. Small improvements and modifications have been made each year. The build was a fun & rewarding experience and also a time of reflection of my Dad’s recent passing. He loved “double enders” and I only discovered his attraction to the Caledonia after his passing. It was a relatively easy build but still presented some challenges. Sailing the boat is an ongoing learning process which I am always improving on. Comfortable for many, fairly easily launched and sailed by one. Focusing on daysailing and boat camping Narragansett Bay and area waters. See Small Boat Magazine April 2020 issue for more.
