Description
MV Wells Gray was built in 1927 at Vancouver’s Linton Shipyard (launched as the private yacht “Hermit”). In 1938 it was purchased by British Columbia’s forest service, operating there until 1979, when it was sold to private hands. While operating in the forest service it received scheduled careful maintenance over the decades at the forest service’s Fraser River Marine Station. Now with its fifth private owner, the boat has had extensive upgrades and restoration, including addition of gyroscopic roll-fin stabilizers. Smoothly cruises at 8 kts, consuming approximately 2.3 gph. The vessel is U.S. flagged and has received a Jones Act exception, allowing it to operate commercially in U.S. waters. Current slip lease in Port Townsend is transferable with the vessel, if desired. More details about the vessel and its restoration work are at wells-gray.com.
