Description
Iain Oughtred’s Elf is his version of an ancient Norwegian faering, adapted for marine plywood planks using modern construction methods. Oughtred had studied færings for over 20 years before he felt he could capture the beauty and functionality of these boats in a practical design. This one is stitch-and-glue per Ian’s drawings.
The construction is of okoume marine plywood, assembled (glued) with epoxy. The whole boat is coated with clear epoxy, two coats of primer and three coats of top coat. The stem and g’wales are laminated with epoxy and finished with two coats of System III clear coat.
With this Elf, comes a pair of professionally made narrow blade spruce oars with Norwegian tholes (see picture) and, a barely used trailer.
