Owner’s Description
FRANCIS LEE is a Bob Perry custom designed long narrow light weight simple wood epoxy composite construction daysailer. She sports a 6’8” tiller, a deep carbon spade balanced rudder and a Carbon mast from a Farr 40. She is extremely easy to handle. She was built by the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Port Hadlock, WA with strip planked Western Red Cedar sheathed in and out with Vectorply set in West System Epoxy. The deck, cockpits and interior structure is all foam core composite Vectorply and West System Epoxy knitted together to the composite hull into one single structure. This has resulted in a very light and very strong vessel. She has seen 15 knots under sail with just her working jib and full mainsail while reaching in 20 knots of true wind with a crew of two aboard. With her mighty 39 hp 3 cyl Yanmar/Saildrive she is capable of seeing double digits under power. She also excels at motor sailing when the air is light. She is very stiff despite being so narrow thanks to a 10 foot draft and a lead bulb at the bottom of her fin keel. She has a 48% ballast to displacement ratio, so she carries her ample sail area of 1170 square feet easily (Mainsail is 700 Sq ft, working jib is 470 sq ft.) She was recently fitted with a custom set of Bob Perry designed boom Bensons and her aft cockpit primary winches are all Harken electrics for easy short handed sailing by her owners a couple both in their 70’s. To say that she fulfilled the original design concept would be a massive understatement. Even Bob Perry was surprised at how weatherly she is while exhibiting very mild manners and a light helm. She has been successfully raced with a crew of 4-6 experienced sailors, however her primary purpose is just for the pure joy of sailing (fast.)Already a member? Log in herePhotos
