15' Welsford Rogue Sail & Oar Skiff (2019)

In looking for an easily trailerable boat for exploring the lakes and rivers of central Massachusetts, this “Rogue” design from New Zealand designer John Welsford with its sailing, rowing and motoring options seemed to fit the bill.

Using the recommended glued lapstrake construction, I completed the hull in a year or so of free weekends and vacation time. After enjoying a season of rowing outings, attention was turned to the sailing options. I had previously purchased plans for the similarly-sized Goat Island Skiff and was drawn to the simplicity of its balanced lug sail and straightforward mast construction.

After receiving an “OK” from the designer, I proceeded to install the Goat Island Skiff sailing rig with just minor modifications to the Rogue’s mast step and it has performed perfectly.

Next will be the addition of a small outboard for the option of some long river journeys.
