Owner’s Description
“The Nordic Folkboat (Swedish: Nordisk Folkbåt) is a Swedish sailboat that was designed by Jac Iversen and Tord Sundén as a racer-cruiser and first built in 1942.
The Folkboat story started life in 1941 in neutral Sweden when the Scandinavian Sailing Federation launched a design competition for a cheaply built boat that would be easy to sail. No single entry satisfied the judging committee, who nevertheless saw admirable traits in six different entries, and commissioned the yacht designer Tord Sunden to draw these elements into a unified whole. The result was a clinker-built fractional sloop with a simple rig (two shrouds each side, jibstay and backstay) and a small, low-profile cabin, on a lively sheer with a raked transom stern.”
(source: Wikipedia)I am a retired cabinet maker which explains in part my interest for wooden boats. Actually at one point I was considering attending either The Landing School of Boat Building and Design in Maine, or the School of Boat Building in Essex, UK. This project was taken over by workload in the shop as cabinet maker.
Hahemi was built in Toronto by boat builder Hans Gurtzman in 1967. Her most recent restoration took place in 2017 at Woodwind Yachts (Ontario, Canada). We are thankful to Ken Lavalette and his team of wooden boats craftsmen who brought her back to this level of seaworthiness. (https://www.woodwindyachts.com/)
Annual maintenance has kept her in fine condition. A few coats of varnish on the bright deck parts, hull and mast are part of the spring pre-launch routine. She is a pure joy on the water and the delight of our guests on board. Most recent upgrade was the replacement of the diesel engine by an electric 5.5 kW/48V propulsion system. The Thoosa motor powered by the four Victron 12V lithium batteries, and the DC/DC 48V to 12V converter charging the house battery, has so far provided us all the range we need and other power requirements (navigation lights, VHF, etc.) for our sailboat. The Victron battery monitor allows us to monitor the system charge and discharge status as we are motoring under different speed and conditions. The Victron Connect App on our cell phone also allows us to monitor the system status.
The system was designed by Annapolis Hybrid Marine (https://www.annapolishybridmarine.com/) who provided all the support required for a self installation. Anyone interested in more info about how we approached this project, and how we managed the self installation is more than welcomed to contact us.
Aside from the environmental cleanliness benefits, and reliability for our day sailing or motor cruising in and out of harbour, another big advantage is that we can now have a conversation with our guests in the cockpit when the wind dies on us. The diesel fumes are no longer an issue when considering a sunset cruise on a warm windless summer evening.Already a member? Log in herePhotos
