Owner’s Description
The Far Reach is a highly modified 1982 Cape Dory 36 we have owned since 2001. In 2009 we gutted her to a bare hull and deck spending six years rebuilding her into our ideal voyaging boat.
She is a simple, strong, elegant, fast traditional sailing machine easy and affordable to maintain.
During the rebuild we removed the engine, filled in the propeller aperture, converted her from wheel to tiller, designed and built a taller lighter mast and longer traditional style bowsprit. We rebuilt her standing rigging with hand spliced SS 7×7 wire rigging. We designed and installed a simple yet elegant seagoing interior. We removed the toe rail and glassed over the hull deck joint with three layers of epoxy and biaxial for a water tight boat then installed 6 3/4″ tall raised bulwarks.
The interior is varnished V groove African Mahogany. The cabinet doors are inset raised panel birdseye maple. The horizontal surfaces are ash. The cabin sole is bare black walnut harvested locally in NC. The cabin sole from the forward cabin to the rudder post can be removed in less than 10 minuets exposing the entire bilge. Much of the interior is removable as well.
She has no furler or electronics other than two small movable 45 watt solar panels. After sailing her about 7,000 miles engine free I installed a small 25 hp Beta diesel engine with a two blade folding prop in an offset shaft to retain her closed propeller aperture and maintain her improved sailing performance.
We relaunched the Far Reach in May of 2015. In the past eight years we have made three round trip offshore passages from NC to the Virgin Islands covering about 11,000 miles. Convergence of vision, patience and old world craftsmanship have resulted in this modern classic. John created a sailer to reflect his consistent life view; honest, traditional, reliable, and putting man in direct touch with nature.
Outstanding work and a beautiful boat! She is a great example of attention to detail. Love your bronze work, on your stanchion bases and elsewhere. Oceans await!
This is clearly a superb refinement of one of Carl Alberg’s greatest offshore cruising designs. Every subtle modification both above and belowdecks are clearly oriented toward simplicity and the robustness required for safety and efficiency offshore. A wonderful example of planning, execution, and the innate talent required to pull it all together. Stunning!
Magnificent !!!!
A real labor of love resulting in a beautiful finish!
Looks like you’ve done an enormous amount of work on her! What a great boat – beautiful and capable! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks very much.
