I too thought that choosing a favorite boat from this year’s WWCBS would be close to impossible. But to be honest it is quite simple; my favorite boat is my latest addition to our collection of small craft.

18′ Gardner Chamberlain Gunning Dory (1966)

    Why?
The boat, built by John Gardner, one of the heroes in the small craft world. A description of the dory is in John’s “The Dory Book” and in “Building Traditional Small Craft.” The book describes the battened seam plywood construction for building a lightweight durable vessel, and a half century later the construction has lived up to the billing.
I started reading John Gardner’s writing in the National Fisherman and then in his books. He was also the driving force in founding the Traditional Small Craft Association TSCA | Traditional Small Craft Association in 1976. As the current President of the TSCA it appropriate and a privilege to be the caretaker of lovely piece of history.

Well the GOLDEN RULE almost single-handedly stopped nuclear bombing of one of the most beautiful areas in the world and invented the peace sign ☮️ along the way. Hard to beat that heritage.

34′ Sea Witch Ketch (1958) – GOLDEN RULE

Fair enough, Mark – both of your boats (GUINEVERE and FRY, for others) could easily be named.

      So, then, how about:

I have long been partial to Paul Gartside’s designs and “Rain Bear” is one of his best. Beautifully built and stunning to look at, what really makes her stand out in my mind is that she would make a marvelous three season sailor. Snugging down below in her ample and cozy accommodations seems like just the ticket.

I agree. The levels of detail and care in her construction by builders Guy and Estelle Curwen over the years have been spectacular. The carving on the head door is wonderful!

There are so many great boats to choose from, so I might have to choose more later…

But every time I see this boat:

    18′ Payor Muscongus Bay 18 Sloop (2011) – TRACIE

…my jaw just drops. The low-slung, sweeping sheer and lusty overhangs. The stout rig for a small boat with a permanent backstay and upper and lower shrouds. The self-tending jib… Then I see that interior! I love the enclosed cuddy, the perfectly-angled bench seats and cockpit coamings.

And she has a twin! But I’d take the red one.

It makes me want to get lost in the joy of playing zephyrs in a simple, beautiful boat. Pure sailing!

Ah! I didn’t know this boat was /is sailed on Damariscotta Lake and Muscongus Bay. Both are nearby and I will definitely get in touch with the owners!
