23' Langner Segelgig Yawl (1910) - NN

  • Owner’s Description

    Our second “Segelgig” was build between 1910 and 1920 at the boatyard of Paul Langner in Friedrichshagen by Berlin, Germany. The lines look more modern than our last Segelgig. We sadly have not got any more information about it. We started to disassemble some parts and found some nostalgic parts from the time in the GDR (East Berlin) where it has been used as a motorboat. Because you were not able to get tropical timber in the GDR an old wardrobe has been used to build a bulkhead. We found leftovers of the old carvings on the inside. There are no plans left from exactly this boat so we always get some surprises. We first thought the boat would be a so called “Wanderrudergig” with two masts and the rudder on the stern. We now found an old cut in the keel to let a rudder through the keel and did not find any traces of a besan mast. We will do some more research on the boat and in old books and find the most original solution.
    We also started to treat some parts with dry ice to prevent further rot. We do not know, when we will find the time for a full restoration.       Beautiful and elegant boats. Were these sailed by one or two persons? Greetings from the Lake of Constance.

        Thank you for your comment. Because this kind of boat evolved out of rowingboats, the are sailed with as many people as you row them. Both of our Segelgigs are build for one rower and one cox but there are also boats out there with two rowers and one cox so you can sail them with three sailors.
