1940 Chris-Craft 22′ Sportsman Sedan

When I purchased Les Cheneaux, a 1940 Chris-Craft 22’ Sportsman Sedan, she
had already gone through three prior owners, with the third one not a good caretaker.
She had spent almost a decade in the basement of the owner’s house which was both
very damp and heated.

Les Cheneaux has been completely restored from the keel up, including a new
3M-5200 no-soak bottom with new chines, keel, stem, frames, knees, frame tie,
Okoume inner bottom, solid African outer bottom, new mahogany hull sides — all
attached with 3M-5200. She has also received new linoleum flooring, show quality paint
and varnish, modern classic gauges, restored steering wheel, new chrome, new
German Hartz cloth canvas top, new head liner, leather upholstery, and cabin top cover.
Les Cheneaux even has a matching Classic Trail custom inboard trailer painted in the
same green as her new bottom paint. Most of this work has been completed by
Jonathon Reus and his team at Macatawa Bay Boat Works in Saugatuck, Michigan.
The original engine for Les Cheneaux was a distant memory and the second
owner had already upgraded to a 350 Mer’cruiser. However, the third owner had not
properly stored her away, so I hired Casey DeHollander, the owner of CD’s Engines, to
bring the mechanicals back to top form. She now runs as good as she looks!
Since the completion of the restoration, Les Cheneaux has been shown at many
boat shows, including Algonac, Gilmore Museum, Hessel, Holland, and Port Huron in
Michigan. She has even traveled to Keels & Wheels in Texas and brought home a silver
cup!

I have owned many boats over the past half century, but none as well built or in
as good of shape as Les Cheneaux. She is far better than when she came out of the
Algonac factory 83 years ago – some people would say she is in Bristol or Concours
condition. But I think she is in better shape than that – she is in Heirloom condition.
