Owner’s Description
A study in compromise makes for a comfortable cruiser as experienced in travels around Penobscot Bay for many years.
Burr Brothers built ten boats between 1955 and 1962 in Mattapoisett MA; three used the John G. Alden Co. Malabar Sr. design. One of those was constructed with a short bowsprit to allow a larger roller-furling genoa while still having a club-footed jib. This boat was first launched as Marrionette then renamed by a few long term owners to Susanne II, Breeze O’Wind, and Minstrel before Hirlas was christened in 2021.Carvel mahogany planking over steam-bent oak frames and oak backbone, bronze-screw fastened. Bright mahogany trunk, coamings, rails, handrails, etc. Self-bailing cockpit with Edson wheel steering to keel-hung rudder. Approx. 5,500-lb. iron ballast keel.
Updated from gas in 2010 with a Beta 20 diesel.Last sailed 2021. Seeking the next caretaker who can get her back in the water for the 2025 season.
