Owner’s Description
The pandemic pea pod. A Doug Hylan designed Beach Pea built in the midwestern US but lives in the waters of coastal Maine.
This beach pea was constructed during a year of illness and provided the necessary mental and physical therapy to get through it.
Much of the hardwood came from a bur oak from my own property and scavenged from savannas in Illinois.Spars were made from Douglas Fir. The lug rig was made by Pope Sails in Rockland, ME. I added a lead weighted centerboard and kick up rudder though I have yet to install the rudder for two reasons. First, I hate to drill into my stem for gudgeons. Second, I used an oar as advised by Doug Hylan and it works very well as a rudder. I’m a lifelong canoe person so this feels very familiar to me.
The midwest where I live part time has several large prairie and savanna restorations where a small, elegant plant, the Scurfy Pea, is being reintroduced. Our little pea pod takes it’s name from that classic plant.
