CONSTANZA is one of five 21′ Handy Billys personally built by her designer. I purchased her from Ned Rendall who had her built. With the addition of a many-windowed, round-fronted cabin, CONSTANZA became a decent cruiser—albeit a rather cozy one. However, you can sit upright inside in comfort, and she has a pair of hinged-backrest seats, one on each side of the steering console. She’s whisper quiet at idle and conversationally quiet at half throttle. Although she’ll do about 16 knots wide open and light, I run her mostly around 8 knots where she’s quieter and I don’t have to keep such a sharp eye out for lobster gear. I’ve had her for nearly 20 years and she’s kept well: her Cetol finish has never required stripping and her batten-seam cedar topsides look as fair as when she was new. She’s on her second 25hp Honda.

Nice boat. I’ve paid particular attention to the Handy Billy on all the OCC videos where the boat was present, and have admired this boat for years. I’ve recently purchased the plans for the HB18. and plan to installed a 20hp. I’ve read all the literature on this design in past issues of Wooden Boat magazine. Would you mind commenting on the HB’s handling characteristics when you’re running WOT. Thanks,
Hello Maynard,
There is so much we could say, Harry and Martha are long time friends, and this is such a nice boat. Most of all thank you for all you have done to make this show possible and for OCH.
Cheers,
Ted and Judy

Harry does indeed do good work; she’s a charmer!
