In 2011 I approached Alex Brainard of Artisan Boatworks about building us a classic daysailer. I explained that I was looking for a boat that I could single handle into my old age, but she needed to have cockpit large enough to accommodate a good size crew of grandchildren. Finally she needed to be fun to sail and of course, “drop-dead gorgeous”. The very first design Alex suggested was the Buzzard Bay 18. It was love at first sight.
Nathanael Herreshoff Mfg built 5 Buzzards Bay 18’s during the winter of 1903/1904 for the Beverly Yacht Club. They were known as the K Class. None of the original 5 have survived. Uncas was the first Buzzards Bay 18 built since 1904. She has proved to be everything we had hoped for and more. UNCAS is fast, fun and the grandkids love her.
In addition to gracing the cover of WoodenBoat (WB#231), she was “Miss July” in the 2014 Calendar of Wooden Boats and “Miss February” in Alison Langley’s 2014 Nautical Images Calendar.

Thanks again, Jim for asking me along to sail with you last summer. If there’s a next time let’s wear warm, slickers if there are more downpours! And we need to get you over for dinner!
Beautiful boat and great video.

David, There will be a next time! Nothing but fond memories. . . an advantage of old age, the great moments stay, the bad fade away:)
We have loved seeing Uncas out sailing around Booth Bay, we think she is beautiful.
Cheers,
Ted and Judy
