Built at Pert Lowell’s, this is a family boat. My Dad and Mom helped tune the design: Hull No 1. As an 8 year old visiting the shop everyday and helping build “Sandpiper” now simply “Piper” shaped my love for wooden boats. This boat remains totally solid. Recently re-powered with a 30 ETEC she is quick – 25kts. Designed to drive standing up with a tiller extension, her flat bottom runs flat and fast. Throw the tiller hard over and she will dip a gunwale right to the water and carve a turn through the tightest of tight winding creeks. In the shallows, lift the engine and drop in the oarlocks. She can be rowed from a seated pulling position or standing facing forward. “Piper” is the perfect boat for her home environment running the creeks from Ipswich to Essex and getting the family downriver to the sandbars. When the weather is right she will make trips up and down the coast from Portsmouth to Boston. In the fall, trailer boat trips up to the mountain lakes never disappoint. This boat leaves me wanting for nothing. She is a dream to run, and her size is very manageable to maintain. After 30 seasons of hard family use, she still shines.
