JoAhna K
58 Foot William Garden Heavy Timber Motor Yacht
Built 1952 by Fellows and Stewart, San Pedro California
Overview
JoAhna K, formerly Katherine Jane and earlier Sea Comber, is a heavy displacement, double ended William Garden designed motor yacht built in 1952 by Fellows and Stewart in San Pedro California. She was designed and constructed for long range coastal and offshore cruising and reflects the conservative scantlings and systems redundancy typical of Garden designs of this era.
This vessel has a well documented ownership history, professional refits, and multiple surveys. She has been continuously maintained and upgraded by knowledgeable owners and shipwrights and remains a structurally sound example of a large West Coast heavy timber motor yacht.
JoAhna K was designed and built in the early post war era when William Garden and builders like Fellows and Stewart were solving a very specific problem. How to build a self contained boat that could keep a family safe, warm, and moving for long periods without outside support.
That is the logic behind this design. Heavy displacement, conservative structure, protected decks, real tankage, redundant systems, and simple dependable propulsion. In modern language it is an offshore capable escape pod. Not in the fantasy survival sense, but in the practical sense. A vessel you can live aboard comfortably, carry meaningful stores, run economically at displacement speed, and depend on when weather, distance, or uncertainty make smaller lighter boats feel like a compromise.
In today’s unsettled times, that same design intent still makes sense. A capable home afloat, built to be steady, self reliant, and difficult to intimidate.Ownership and History Summary
The vessel was originally commissioned by George Mitchell, an Oscar winning camera designer, with the intent of family voyaging including a planned Galapagos trip that was never undertaken. The boat was built with long range capacity including large fuel and water storage.
In the 1970s the vessel was purchased by Bob White, a Seattle dentist, renamed Sea Comber, and cruised extensively in Southeast Alaska for more than 20 summers. During this period the vessel served both as a cruising platform and a mobile dental clinic providing free dental services in remote Alaskan villages. The boat is well known in Southeast Alaska from this era.
In 2002 the vessel changed ownership, was renamed Katherine Jane, and underwent a comprehensive professional refit exceeding seven hundred fifty thousand dollars. Major mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and deck systems were replaced or rebuilt at that time.
Following the refit the vessel entered limited charter service in Anacortes Washington. In 2016 the vessel suffered a localized diesel heater chimney fire. Damage was confined and did not affect hull integrity. The vessel was declared a constructive total loss by the insurer and subsequently purchased and restored by a highly experienced shipwright and owner of a large Oregon lumber supply company. Repairs and improvements exceeded the scope of fire related damage and included substantial structural deck and timber work.
The current owners purchased the vessel after professional survey and have continued regular maintenance and operation. The vessel is currently located in the Pacific Northwest.Vessel Particulars
