Ellie is essentially a new boat – virtually everything was replaced except the hull, deck, and mast extrusion. The interior layout remains fairly true to the original, though the Herreshoff interior brightens her up considerably, as does the addition of a hatch in the salon. The deck layout works well for sail handling and anchoring and she’s a very easy boat to singlehand. The photos show the reverse tiller which steers the boat under wind vane or autopilot. This really frees up the cockpit except when hand steering.
Ellie’s owner and lifelong sailor chose this 1967 Ericson 30 as a retirement project after his woodworking career ended. His previous boats were all wooden and much larger than Ellie. She was a multi year backyard project, and when completed in 2015, cruised the CA coast and Mexico. She will be heading to the Pacific NW in the Spring.

Great boat Thomas, Beautiful job on the interior. I had a 1973 Bristol that I did over from a bare hull. So, I know the labor and love you put into it. Dave Satter
Hi David, and thanks for your feedback. Yeah, she was quite a project but immensely satisfying, and I’ve never regretted taking on the job. She’s currently in the PNW, has been to Alaska, and I really enjoy being aboard her. When I was working as a woodworker for many years, I put my heart into every job but seldom saw the results of my labor after the jobs were completed. Ellie is different, and I’ve been enjoying the heck out of her for ten years. Thanks again for your comment and I hope that you enjoyed your Bristol project. By the way, my brother has a beautiful Bristol 35 and loves the boat.
Hi Brandon- I’ve never seen such a thing, but I can’t imagine that this is the first. It was a little tricky- had to have a new bronze tiller head cast and machined, but the whole thing has worked out really well. See ya.

Love the double tiller arrangement! Did you come up with that? Brilliant!
