Owner’s Description
Tolman Skiffs are stitch and glue, bulkhead and stringer, v bottom plywood skiffs easily built by home builders using common skills, common tools and common materials. With their variable deadrise, high bow, dory flare, sealed deck, flotation tanks and splashwell, they were designed for the waters surrounding the Alaskan Peninsula, not for Saturday afternoons in protected waters. They can also be customized by the builder for recreational or commercial use; for fishing, cruising, or working an oyster or mussel farm, or pulling lobster traps.
Their light weight and easily driven hull shape means they can carry larger loads using less power than a comparable fiberglass or traditionally built wooden hull. My boat in the pictures is a 22′ Widebody center console powered by a 60hp Etec which will attain a top speed of 28 knots.
Their modern construction using plywood panels and longitudinal stringers means that there are no frames to cut when building this boat. The whole hull consists of bottom and side panels, two longitudinal stringers, a bowstem, shelves and transom all epoxied together into a monocoque structure.
Three different models of Tolman Skiffs can be built from plans ranging from 18′ to 24′ in length. Kits of CNC cut parts to build the basic hull are also available.Already a member? Log in herePhotos
