Owner’s Description
Maya is a Maid of Endor gaff sloop designed by John Atkin in 1957. Maya was built in Opua, Bay of Islands, New Zealand in 2000 by Cal Crooks for sailmaker Rick Johnson. Unfortunately he died soon after and I bought her from Rick’s widow. I shipped her to Wellington and sailed her across to Nelson.
I purchased the original plans and realised not all details had been completed such as the fife rail, self-tacking stay sail boom, toe rails etc. Nelson boat builder Andre Ludwig completed these items. I had a new Nanni 10hp diesel installed and changed all plastic blocks to timber, installed mast hoops, and bought or had cast bronze items such as cleats, anchor roller, winches, and portholes from the US (Port Townsend Foundry), Germany (Toplicht), Tasmania (Australia Yacht Winch), and the UK (Arthur Beale).
Recently I asked Andre to upgrade the cabin with mahogany fittings including a camp-cruising type galley box and a completely demountable enclosure for the motor. It is a fantastic job.
She is the most beautiful sail boat in the harbour. Everyone who sees her comments how beautiful she is, many boaties detouring over to tell me. I agree with them.Already a member? Log in herePhotos
