The Little VikingBuilt from the line drawing of a Sunnhordaland faering in B Faeroyvik’s “Inshore craft of Norway”.
I wanted the boat to be as traditional as possible: rivets and tunnels, pine tar and wool in laps. The T shaped keel and the plank scarfs were glued, but everything else was as historically authentic as I could make it.
The keel and ribs are Black Locust, the planking Larch. Planks end with a flat bevel on the straight sided stem. I got many construction details from Adrian Osler’s “The Shetland Boat”, including data for the proportions of the square sail. The square sail is not the most sensible choice but it had to be done. Boat makes about 20 degrees to windward after leeward drift. It is a great rowboat. The rudder hardware is I believe a Shetland design. The oar locks and shroud needles are locust crooks. The mast and yard are from a Norway spruce I planted 25 years ago. It lives on a trailer and requires presoaking; when wet it takes on about a gallon per hour. Modern caulks might have been a sensible thing to use. Finish is just pine tar and raw linseed applied warm.Already a member? Log in herePhotos
