SS #150 is a 16 foot, small sloop, that was designed by Benjamin Hallock, of Center Moriches Long Island, NY in 1908 for the local yacht clubs to use in class racing. Benjamin was an apprentice to Gill Smith who was famous on Long Island for building Cat Boats. It is a local boat with only about 160 built.
She is wet and uncomfortable but boy she she is fun to sail.
# 150 was started by another local boat builder Louis Howell. However after framing the boat out he was unable to complete it due to health reasons. I bought the boat from him when I was a freshman in high school and spent the next 3 years completing it. I sailed it frequently until I started to go to sea in 1966. Over the following years I used it less and less and it fell in disrepair and un-sailable. In 2008 the SS Class Association held a centennial regatta that I wanted to participate but 150 wasn’t usable so I bought #76, a Benjamin Hallock boat built in 1920. It needed some work and I had another local boat builder Fred Scopinich do the work for me. In partial payment for the work I gave him 150. He brought her back to life and sold it. This past year I bought it back so she is now with the person who built her in 1961. The full story can be found by googling The “Magic Boat Teenage Boatbuilder.” The full story of the SS class can be found in the book “The Magic Boat by Meredith Murray”.Photos

This boat is great for Moriches Bay where there are lots of sand bars and flats at low tide. It’s easy to jump out of this boat into the shallow water and pull it along if it runs aground. It’s very easy to run up on a beach in the summer when you want to go swimming in hot weather. It’s a perfect fun sailboat for both kids and adults. The folks in the SSCA try to take good care of these boats, which hold up very well despite their age.
