Elevena is one of only a handful of suriving boats of the national German 15 sqm race dinghy class. Pre WWII around 800 boats were built to tolerant specs which allowed designers to experiment with many different shapes and lengths. Measured sail area is 15 sqm, true upwind about 20 sqm plus 25 sqm Spinnaker. A race crew of 2 is mandatory.
Elevena ist a late follower, built in 1958 from Khaya, Mahogany and Oak by private builders, but the class never re-emerged post war. She is under a continuous renovation program and competes in classic boat races as well as during an annual meeting of the class.

Dear both,
finally coming back to your comments after a year 🙂
Preference of rig design is “undecided”. It appears that gunter rigs provide more power downwind and more sensitive trim options. Ultimately the looks with gunter rig are more classical. Elvena was built with a marconi mast in 1958 so I kept it that way.
Enjoy the show

Beautiful boat!
It’s interesting seeing the different rigs on the boats. Looks like some fun racing.
Indeed! The speed potential is on par with modern designs. Always on the edge as these boats are rather narrow, and the race is over after a capsize.
Cheers
Christoph
It’s a development class, which make these things exciting. I like seeing the gunter rigs on these, more weight aloft, but maybe better sail control……
