“Leviathan” is a 9’4” Iain Oughtred design. With modifications over his earlier Granny Pram it is now called a GEEP by Iain.
In Spring 2020 we were well into Covid lockdown in the UK and I was just retiring from my career.
My son lives on the south coast of England in an apartment by the beach and was looking for a secondhand cheap, light dinghy to beach launch through the surf. I rashly said “I’ll build you one for a few quid”. Plans and materials were ordered, building space put in order and barely 6 weeks later, lockdown was lifted and Leviathan was launched into the English Channel. She sailed well on her lug rig and one particularly memorable trip ended with us running for home with a reef in and rolling through a building sea. We made it back safely, a testament to the fact that even the smallest boat can, in necessity, do amazing things.

Lovely little craft! Iain does indeed design capable small boats. Six weeks build time; that has got to be some kind of record. So, your son has his boat, what are you going to build for yourself?

I still had my Paul Gartside 12ft lug sail dinghy, Amazon. She is also on the show. As a serial builder I am just lofting the plans for a 16ft gaff rigged cruising dinghy that Paul has just designed for me. The plans will be be published in Pauls series of Watercraft Magazine articles shortly and be available on his website.
Oh and by the way Leviathan is back with me for winter storage so the garden is looking like a proper boatyard!
