The beautiful sailing yacht Weatherly still holds the distinction to this very day of being the only America’s Cup defender that competed once for the honor of defending the Auld Cup and lost (1958), yet went on to successfully not only to be chosen to defend but also to prevail successfully against Gretel (1962) to win the America’s Cup. JFK and Jackie witnessed her win in ’62, and Senator Ted Kennedy enjoyed sailing her on Buzzard’s Bay for many years.
